Did this little diddy yesterday. It was so fun using pastels, I wanna do a couple more.

I dreamt about black wolves in an old familiar place... it was really eerie feeling when I woke up, so this is my homage to the experience.

EPSON SCANNERRRR!!!! - Memories

We got a scanner/printer finallyyy! Having a scanner has made my life amazing - and it was only $60! Now I can record my work more easily :D

Stuff I scanned in that from recent and that has just sat inside my sketchbook for a while.

I focused in on some shots in their sequence and just because it looked cool with kodak border.

The photograph above is of Henry's aweeesoome, clay sculpted Owl. SO COOL!

The painting below is some watercolor and acrylic and colored pencil.

I got a nice reference from a picture taken in west palm by a friendly neighbor, Jeri Cohen!

Scopophillia

On November 17, 2011, I visited the Matthew Marks on West 24th St. and viewed Nan Goldin's Scopophilia exhibition. In the back room there was a 25 minute slide installation (commissioned last year by the Louvre Museum). There were over 400 photographs chosen from Goldin's career, that were paired her own autobiographical images with new photographs of paintings and sculptures from the Louvre's collection. Apparently, it was a very unique permission Goldin had to photograph paintings and sculptures from the Louvre - I wish I could take pictures of masterpieces in the Louvre and compare it next to my pictures of everyday life and have people see my work resemble a masterpiece.

In all seriousness, many photos were interesting, disturbing even. Begging a story where I fill in the gaps. That's fun, I love series of photos where I make a meaning to it. The waterfall pictures had beautiful action falling upon people of some gravity of a person. And the manner in which the were shot, the effects, were all very natural. Some candid looking, many posed, lots of breasts - breasts everywhere really - there just something I can't point out that bothers me, and it's not the lack of dicks in almost every Chelsea gallery.

Honestly, I'm not hating on Goldin, but it appears to me as having some friends pose for her fancy new camera that has high resolution and depth of field. In one room of the exhibition, it was a circular room, her photographs hung of these anonymous people - no one famous, just your average neighbor..and above them hung a photo of a saint or martyr from some old painting in the Louvre.

The repetition of the same models for many of the photographs gives it a movie feel - a character you grow to know. You don't know much about her but she's seen over and over again, as well as other characters. Their significance to the respective masterpiece is a study I'd have to make seeing each over and over again. Unless it was a random slideshow where her picture and the Louvre's pictures took turn with no implication, therefore rendering the whole installation a bluff.

I must add that in seeing it in person, there was this eerie gregorian chant music playing in the installation room, but it appeared to be a female voice - my memory fails me now. Maybe if it was a female chant, it's a clear statement, Women not having any rights in the church, but glorified in art? There was some narration over the chant, but too hard to understand through the echo of the room. Either way, the music made me uneasy, sad even - like a recount of the life of someone who has passed. Maybe the art's past, and the life of it today?

Goldin' artist statement: Desire awoken by images is the project's true starting point. It is about the idea of taking a picture of a sculpture or a painting in an attempt to bring it to life."

More specifically, The New Yorker reiterated her artist statement and the purpose or impact of these juxtapositions.

"Vince Aletti writes, Goldin 'photographed paintings by Delacroix, Corot, Zurbarán, and Bronzino, which fed that desire, then paired them with pictures of her friends and lovers, creating startling juxtapositions.' The result is 'a sensational paean, at once ecstatic and elegiac, to love, sex, and sensuality.' "

I'm sure this exhibition in many ways can be seen as sensational and marvelous in comparing her lovers and friends to the holiest of holy, with desire and sex as common as anyone's. There is just a sense I can't shake that the artist is wisely make herself known by leeching off the fame of masterpieces. And truthfully, that is the best way to make yourself known, a guarantee to find some sort of success somewhere. It is Goldin's 8th exhibition in the Marks Gallery, so it appears that maybe that wasn't the initial deal breaker to get a gig.

Overall, the exhibition called Scopophillia means "the love of looking." And in looking at all the photos, the only love I found, is in the congruency of the subjects, making it a familiar peek on the lives of these people.

I think the thing that bothers me is that at a gallery, we love to look at whatever is hanging up or on display. That is really why you walk in a gallery, to look at things. I feel the meaning of the title exploits a typical behavior that is expected from viewing her art. The change in language makes the title more interesting, more, "ooh, Scopophillia, sounds ancient, foreign, scientific - whatever could it be?" Meanwhile, if she named it, "The Love of Looking," people would be like, "well no shit, of course I love to look at things, or else I wouldn't be here."

I'm sure it can be argued that Toys R Us clearly sells Toys, but that's a company, a more permanent thing. This series of art, temporarily hanging, just evokes a pretentious vibe with a chant for attention to be advertised.

Goldin is smart but I'd give her show 3 stars.

Anyway, who am I? Just a kid looking at art and trying to be somebody.

My Mama's Ocean

I started this painting a loooong time ago.. my mom really like a picture she found of the ocean with flowers and grass in the forefront. So I did an oil painting on a big panel (still need the exact size) of ......I forgot what this panel type is called. When Henry wakes up I will ask him. I started it in July, where I have my last post about it. I took it to my Round Table Discussion to show the Honors Studies Program. Professor Hildrew of UCC told me he hated it - it was soooo typical and a term I would like to analyze a little further..... "Mall Art." or since my mom loves it... "Mom Art."

I'm sorry it took me so long mommy! I know that you know there was a lot going on during school. And for a while I was stuck on how to progress and finish it. So I did the watercolor to re-awaken my beach senses. :) Touched it up a little more and - tadaaaa! Who knows. Maybe I'll do more to it since, it's SO BIG and who knows when we'll get it framed or where we'll hang it up haha.

Canon Rebel Film

This picture has become very personal to me. The free flowing movement yet discipline in structure, and the GLORRRRRRRIOUS colors made me fall in love with it.

I think I will make a nice gilée print for my mom. She loved it, too!

The Cat and the Mice

If you are wise you won't be deceived by the innocent airs of those whom you have once found to be dangerous.

This was a harder one. Just enough time for a sketch, though.

The Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs

Aesop's Fables / The Fox & The Grapes

I have started an assignment for myself. I bought a copy of Aesop's Fables and each day I am going to draw an illustration of the story. I will try my best to post a picture of every one of them.

This is "The Fox and The Grapes"

A hungry fox saw some fine bunches of grapes hanging from a vine that was trained along a high trellis and did his best to reach them by jumping as high as he could into the air. But it was all in vain, for they were just out of reach. So he gave up trying and walked away with an air of dignity and unconcern, remarking, "I thought those grapes were ripe, but I see now they are quite sour."

Spring and Robin!

So today is the first day of spring, yayyyy!!!

But something even cooler happened today. I came home to a sound on my backdoor.. like someone was knocking. I go to look and theres a robin flying and pecking at the glass door, flying back and forth from the trees to the railing to the window.

He/she did this ALL DAY! I thought he was checkin out his reflection but every time we got close to the door, he flew away! and Rex went howling over a few times and he'd fly away, so even if I wanted to let him in, he wouldn't.

I come home after a half hour out and he's still at the door, sitting there looking inside and pecking every so often.

I left again for 2 hours for have dinner at my grandma's and when we got home, HE WAS STILL THERE!

I took so many pictures, some really gorgeous ones, so I just HAD to share with everyone.

There's a different bird in the mix of pictures that I'm sharing because their lovely shots.

I want to think someone from the other side, that has passed away, is trying to communicate or play with us through this little robin. I just want to take a second to say, Hi! :)

Sketchbook Watercolor

So, last month in Chile, I did a little watercolor of a picture I brought there to share with others. The picture was one I took of Islamorada... looks like a postcard honestly.

So here's an hour's worth of scribbling.

I'm currently painting a larger more detailed watercolor of this same image for my to-be Mother-in-Law. She's going to be soooo excited :) because so far I'm in LOVE with it.

Honors Round Table Discussion

After completing my Special Honors Project, I took part in a round table discussion/presentation of my assignments on December 14, 2010. My project included: a drawing from observation and a painting from observation of the same object; a landscape (or as Prof. Hildrew put it "Mall Art") and my stab at abstraction. I asked for some feedback on what people thought of the abstraction...

Public Speaking and English Professor Murphy responded with the following: "Gave me many specifics: the downlight on the pool table, the tall woman with the bad spine, the allusion to 'Water Lilies,'and O'Keefe's bones-- I love the juxtaposition of such disparate subjects. It is the melange we can find meaning."

This is the mural that I put 69 volunteered hours into, alongside my faithful creative committee! It is a on a 9ft x 16ft canvas stretched on a frame, done in interior latex house paint. It currently hangs in the hallway at the Plainfield Campus. This was done for Phi Theta Kappa - Iota Xi, as a college honors project addressing the issue of Unemployment as a subculture in our community and campus. This is an issue under the Democratization of Information: Power, Peril, and Promise. Education and graduation is depicted as the symbol of success.

This is "The Great sUCCession!"

An ink painting based off myself, looking very withered, was scanned in to photoshop and edited to look even older.

The illustration is hoped to make it on the Title Page for Neville's Lectures 1962('63?): The Awakening.

The dove and hand are symbolic of the unity between the divine and self; acknowledging your whole self.

SUCCESS AT UCC'S ART COMPETITION!

Well, I am excited to post that a couple weeks ago I won:

3rd place for Illustration

in UCC's Art Society - Student Art Competition! A VERY handsome scholarship package right there :)

I still don't know which pieces won, but it's just a matter of time before I update this post with the pictures of which pieces!

Tomorrow night is Award's Night at UCC, where I will receive what the letter in the mail said was "an academic and/or service award." So another surprise is in store!

I am also pleased to announce another successful semester at UCC.

5 classes: all A's = a Cumulative GPA of 3.9

I am creating a piece for Phi Theta Kappa's Art Exhibition.

The challenge is to make a work of art using 90% recycled materials and have it center around the Honors Study Topic:

The Democratization of Information: Power, Peril, Promise.

How does readily available information impact the society?

So far I've created this lovely piece, however thoughts and opinions would help in focusing on the motif.

My family in Chile went on vacation for two weeks, and had a blast by the beach. I was inspired by my cousin's daughter's innocence and jubilant mannerism in the pictures sent to me.
(She is the little girl in the post below as well.)

Some work needs to be done to it still, but not bad for an hour drawing =]

Two Lovely Ladies

This is a piece I did in October. I did as a gift for my cousin and her daughter in Chile. My grandparents were visiting here in the states for two months, so I sent them home with a little painting. And when I say little, I mean little! This is a 4"x6" canvas panel, done in Acrylic!

I only got the picture now, because it was sealed in the suit case before I remember to get my camera HAHA

So many thanks to my cousins for photographing it with her lovely camera.

The End of My Third Semester

So! I finished my third Semester at UCC. I got an A in my Art Honor's Independent Study. It was a lot of fun and I finally got pictures of pieces to post up!

I did a study on movies - 6 of them. I filled up a entire 18x24 sketchbook of thumbnails (which I will have to get pictures of some eventually). I really feel that my sense of composition has grown. Time was a big constraint due to my other 4 classes and 2 clubs, but looking back I see my progress. As I spoke more with Professor Hildrew and my dear Henri, when doing these paintings, I started to focus more on what the director really wants the viewer to see or feel. And when I felt that I achieved that, I would add a little more of my twang of perception in it.
